While at a happy hour last week I learned about a great organization, No Kid Hungry and an exciting annual event they host called Taste of the Nation. At the meet up, representatives from No Kid Hungry spoke highly of their organization and all the work they do. It seemed like a worthy cause, so once I made it home I did some more research and found their mission statement:
NO CHILD SHOULD GROW UP HUNGRY IN AMERICA. But 1 in 5 children struggles with hunger. Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign is ending childhood hunger in America by connecting kids in need with nutritious food and teaching families how to cook healthy, affordable meals. You can help surround kids with healthy food where they live, learn and play.
One of my favorite things about No Kid Hungry is the commitment to meals during the Summer Break. When you look at the number of students that participate in free or reduced lunch programs during the school year, you cannot help but to wonder how these kids are making it through the summer without these programs. I was thrilled to see groups like No Kid Hungry take on that challenge by providing children with healthy meals. To help achieve their goals, each year No Kid Hungry hosts the Taste of the Nation event in more than 30 cities, including Houston. The event features premiere chefs and mixologists from the Houston area. This years Taste of the Nation – Houston will be held at the Corinthian on September 29, 2015. You can check out the featured restaurants and chefs here. Some of my personal favorites from the current list are Holley’s, Weights + Measures and Table 57. There are also several other featured restaurants that are on my current list to try.
All of event proceeds support No Kid Hungry, just $1 can help feed a child in need 10 healthy meals, so your participation can have a huge impact. Last year Houston’s taste of the nation raised enough to connect kids to 1.4 million healthy meals. I am really excited about the opportunity to eat some great food prepared by some of Houston’s chefs all while benefiting a great cause. As a bonus, Black Girls Who Brunch readers can use my exclusive discount code BGWBHTX for 10 percent off of the ticket prices through September 25! This is so cool!! We need to do some research on events like this around us. We are huge supporters of the homeless community too an always try to have compassion for them! Great post! http://www.ourfoodieappetite.com/lubo-review-virginia-beach-chicks-beach/
