Foodie Travels: Isla Roatan, Honduras

I recently returned from a week long Carnival Cruise to the Caribbean!  I went with 16 members of my family and overall it was a really good time! We got off to a rocky start though, with Hurricane Danny in the Atlantic Ocean.  Then ironically, my name sake Hurricane Erika, almost complicated our return home.  Due to Danny, Carnival changed our itinerary the day before the cruise, sending the planner in me into a tailspin! I spent months researching our previous locations, but now I only had hours to find what to do and see in these places.  It forced [...]

Black Girls Who Brunch AND Blog

Whew last weekend was exhausting! Sam Smith concert, an 80s vs 90s party and then brunch with fellow bloggers! This was all before noon on Saturday.  If my schedule was not crazy enough, a flat tire meant I had to roll up to brunch in Uptown Park sporting my donut tire.  Despite the weekend craziness, it was great to gather with a group of fellow bloggers to enjoy a delicious brunch and excellent conversation. Renia, the creator of Gristle and Gossip suggested that several black food bloggers meet for brunch during the Houston Restaurant Weeks month.  Renia picked the french [...]

Houston Press Tacolandia

Houston Press is hosting their first Tacolandia at Buffalo Bayou Park on October 24th.  An entire event dedicated to tacos?? It's like the people at Houston Press read my mind.  I love a good taco, but I have really been interested in the fun unique things that chefs are doing with a taco!  We have moved well beyond meat, salsa and cheese folks.  This event will showcase all the best Houston has to offer in the taco "food group."  For the cost of admission, you will be able to sample as many tacos as your stomach can endure.   Houston [...]

Quick Post: Lunch in Midtown

Holley's has sadly closed.  Be on the look out though, I expect Mark Holley to pop up again.  On Friday my co-worker and I were desperate to try somewhere new for our weekly Friday lunch out.  Surprisingly, this foodie brown paper bags it during most of the week. That's how I am able to afford the weekend splurges :).  I suggested Holley's in midtown because it was close and participating in the Houston Restaurants Weeks. I have been to Holley's before and enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Holley's is a place that I would typically make a reservation for, but we [...]

Helpie Hour: Foodies Give Back

It is only fitting that even my volunteer work revolves around food!! On Thursday I participated in the FRESH Young Professional's group "Helpie Hour" at the Houston Food Bank.  FRESH, is a group comprised of young professionals whose work focuses on benefiting the Houston Food Bank.  The Helpie Hour is a genius idea where volunteers spend an hour working on some activity at the Food Bank and then spend the last half eating and drinking as you would at any traditional happy hour. The cafe area. I love the HOPE sign. One thing I loved about the Houston [...]

Del Frisco’s Goodbye Dinner

It's Thursday so I might as well post a fuzzy throwback of Morgan and I! Back when I had braids and pretended to be natural at a natural hair event with this natural hair maven ha!  I could always count on her to do random unique things in Houston! I will selfishly miss my friend, but I am SO happy for her new opportunities back at home :) My dear friend Morgan left me to go back to her hometown yesterday :(.  It was only fitting for us to end it how it all began, with food.  We [...]

Tipsy Dessert Bar Festival Review

Friday night I went to the Tipsy Dessert Bar Festival with my family that was in town from Missouri and Dallas!  The festival was hosted by Tipsy Dessert Bar, a company that specializes in alcohol infused ice cream.  The venue for the event was the Silo Live Music Venue. This is one of THE most unique places I have ever been to in Houston.  It's just past downtown on I10 in an area that seems to be transforming from an industrial to residential area.  The Silo Live Music Venue personifies that.  I am not sure what industry it was used for [...]

Houston Restaurant Weeks: Oceanaire Seafood Room

Oceaniare Dining Room This past weekend we celebrated my friend Leeann's birthday at Oceaniare Seafood Room. If you recall, Oceanaire was on my list of places to go for Houston Restaurant Weeks so I was excited about this pick! We had a larger group so we were seated in a semi private area to the side of the main dining room.  The restaurant printed up personalized menus with "Happy Birthday Leeann!" for everyone.  They even put a ribbon on one and gave to my friend as a souvenir.  I thought that was a great touch! Personalized menu for the birthday [...]

Celebratory Brunch!

I met up with a group of high school friends to celebrate a few things.  First, my good friend got engaged in Europe a few weeks ago and this was our first chance to see her in person to congratulate her.  Second my other good friend just completed her degree.  We are so very proud of her and it deserved a good brunch to celebrate.  Then finally, as you can imagine, I surround myself with fellow foodies so we were also celebrating the first Sunday of Houston restaurant weeks :) This year there are not too many brunch options on the [...]

Taste of the Nation : Eat for a Cause

While at a happy hour last week I learned about a great organization, No Kid Hungry and an exciting annual event they host called Taste of the Nation.  At the meet up, representatives from No Kid Hungry spoke highly of their organization and all the work they do.  It seemed like a worthy cause, so once I made it home I did some more research and found their mission statement: NO CHILD SHOULD GROW UP HUNGRY IN AMERICA. But 1 in 5 children struggles with hunger. Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign is ending childhood hunger in America by [...]
