Houston spring is upon us!! The fact that by February we are back to sunny skies and 70 degree weather is why I will never trade in my hometown for a fancier model. When the sun is shining I need to be out in the streets doing something and that generally includes eating. On a Friday earlier this month, my co-worker and I stopped by the Kitchen at the Dunlavy for a quick lunch at this beautiful venue.
The Kitchen at the Dunlavy is part of the new Buffalo Bayou park along Allen Parkway. The area includes a skate park, a trail and scenic views of the bayou. Once inside, you are immediately greeted with a tons of beautiful chandeliers. There are floor to ceiling windows that open to views of the bayou and carefully decorated garden areas. There is even a screened in patio area that gives you more of the indoor/outdoor feel. Of course that space is popular so we were unable to sit in that area. We grabbed a seat at one of the large communal tables in the main dining room. Similar to places like Local Foods, you are expected to break bread with strangers. Again, I love this concept and think that it is super efficient for lunch crowds. I should also note that this space doubles as an event space!
The lunch menu is made primarily of salads and sandwiches. My co-worker ordered one of the salads, I believe the Fattoush Salad. While it looked gorgeous, she said the flavor was not very impressive. I ordered the Chicken BLT with a Broccoli Salad as a side. I thought this dish was done really well. The chicken was seasoned and moist which is my main requirement for a chicken sandwich. The other highlight of the sandwich was the brioche bun! I can almost tolerate a bad sandwich if the bread is on point! The broccoli salad left something to be desired though. The dressing was like a thick mayonnaise sauce that added no flavor. I took a few bites and let it go. As far as the side options, yes they were healthier options instead of chips or fries, but I would have preferred more typical sides with my sandwich.
The smoothies seemed to be pretty popular! My co-worker grabbed one of the green smoothies and said she enjoyed it MUCH more than the salad. I believe wine is offered, but this darn thing called a 9-5 job prevented me from grabbing a glass.
It’s obviously a cute space and provides plenty of photo opportunities so that will definitely draw a crowd. For me, the Chicken BLT is worth coming back for but some of the other items not so much. It is also on my list of weekend brunches spots too so I will definitely update after I visit again!
