Bronx’s own Jamaican restaurant Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill made its way to Houston opening TWO locations in the last few weeks! They hosted a grand opening with much fanfare a few weekends ago. I was feeling a bit anti-social so I skipped the big party and decided to swing by on a quiet Saturday to try out Golden Krust! In short, I enjoyed it but keep reading for the full experience !
The Setup

I visited the Westheimer location which is in a busy shopping center near a Home Depot and Pet’s Mart. I expect it do well considering the location. As far as setup, Golden Krust is a pretty casual spot. Similar to a Chipotle, guests come in and order from a cafeteria style counter. As someone who is not well versed in Jamaican cuisine, I liked the ability to see what I was ordering! For the bakery part, a simple shelf sat near the cash register allowing guests to casually pick up baked goods. There are a few tables inside for dining, but this feels more like a grab and go affair which is exactly what I did.

The baked items!
The Food

Stewed chicken!
Now for the fun part! The food! Like I said above, I am vaguely familiar with Jamaican cuisine so I entered Golden Krust ready to try it all. The stewed chicken caught my eye from the buffet, so I ordered that with rice. It also comes with plantains and cabbage. This chicken was so flavorful and tender! They even pour a bit of the gravy on your rice. So good! I ate every bit of that. I obviously had to get a meat patty as well. I am scary so I went for the mild version, but I think I will go for spicy on my next visit as I imagine it has more flavor than the mild version. I enjoyed the doughy bread with the patty and the meat has a good flavor too.

A close up on that rice and gravy. Delicious.

Plantains
I also grabbed the last little bit of mac and cheese, which I will not lie was not that good. It was pretty dry and likely had been out for awhile. Despite, the disappointment I would probably order it again as long as it looks like a fresh batch. All and all though I really did I enjoy my meal!
The Takeaway
I like to keep a list of restaurants that offer different cuisines for when I feel like something other than standard far like chicken, pizza or a burger. Golden Krust definitely brings something different and does many of the items really well. I say add Golden Krust to your list of quick and reasonably priced lunch/dinner spots!
