Buff Burger invited Black Girls Who Brunch to a media event a few weeks back. I am still new to this blogging stuff so every time an invite lands in my inbox I get really excited! Please trust that I am honest to a fault, therefore the only places I will be mentioning on this here blog are places I actually enjoyed. I do want to note on posts when I am invited for a media event because my experiences at the event will be different than the average patron. What should stay the same no matter the occasion is the FOOD and that is ultimately why you are here right?
Location: Buff Burger is located off of I-10 and Wirt/Chimney Rock in a shopping center. I do not think it is the best location for being discovered from the highway, but once you know it is there you an get to it pretty conveniently from I-10 or Chimney Rock.
Service: Buff Burger is owned and operated by a husband and wife. I had the pleasure of speaking with owner Sara during the event. I have to say she was the sweetest lady! Sara and her husband really rolled out the red carpet for us during the media event. They checked with us several times to see how we liked the food and brought us a couple rounds of fries after we asked. We felt right at home!
Food and Drinks: Most media events are set up as tasting menus. Buff Burgers’ event was no different. For the first course, we were served their typical sides. Buff Burger fries, truffle fries and edamame. I loved the idea of edamame served like fries. It is a healthier side dish that still has a kick of salt like the fries. For the fries, both options are crispy and flavored well with sea salt. The parmesan takes them up a notch for the truffle fries, but I genuinely liked both options. I also am a fan of any fry that looks like it was sliced by hand in the back before going into the fryer.
For the main course, the staff brought out a tray of five sliders and a tray of five drinks organized in the same way as the sliders for a slider and beer/wine pairing ! A slider tasting paired with beer and wine?? It was the epitome of champagne tastes on a beer budget which is the definition of ME.
The sliders included fried chicken slider, an ahi tuna slider, a traditional bacon & cheese, an avocado burger and a goat cheese burger. I am not a beer drinker so I skipped over the three beer pairings. Buff Burger does feature local breweries like Karbach. All my beer drinking friends go crazy over Karbach, so I would venture to say it is pretty good if you like beer. The bacon cheeseburger was paired with a root beer float. I have never been a fan of root beer floats until now. The ice cream was the perfect creaminess and sweetness. Then coupled with the bacon cheeseburger it was an All American moment. I highly recommend that combination on your first visit. The fried chicken slider was paired with a New Zealand white wine. Again I was pleasantly surprised that this pairing turned out great. I am the girl who goes for the cliche Moscato because it is sweet. This white wine was definitely not a dry wine, but it was not the Koolaid sweet wine that I typically go for. I felt a tad more sophisticated in that moment, HA!
As for the sliders, I really liked all of them. My favorite, the bacon cheeseburger, is based on my own personal preference for burgers. Even still, I cannot say that I would be mad if I was forced to eat any of the other burger options again. For the beef sliders, the meat was cooked well and gains its flavor from the toppings and the bun. Oh and that bun!!! It is soft and a perfect golden brown. The fried chicken slider comes in second for me. The chicken was seasoned well and had a great coating. The wine pairing took it up a notch. The goat cheese slider, gets it’s flavoring from the cheese and garlic aioli, which also was a good combination. My sister, the avocado fanatic, devoured the avocado slider. Then finally, the ahi tuna slider. It is not what you expect on a slider, but I liked it as well. As with the other sliders, the toppings on the tuna slider such as wasabi aioli makes all the difference.
Overall: Because I am greedy, within a week of this event I was back at Buff Burger to try their burgers again. This time I grabbed a full size bacon cheese burger with truffle fries. It was the same greatness that I experienced on my first trip. The staff was equally nice and accommodating as well. Buff Burger is definitely deserves to be in the discussion of great local burger spots! I am still making my rounds, but I will eventually compile a list of my favorite Houston burger spots.
