Oh how I love events with my fellow Houston Food Blogger Collective members!!  For October, Songkran Kitchen in Uptown Park hosted us for an elaborate tasting menu of some of their best dishes.  The menu was literally three pages, so once we were seated on the patio, we knew we would be in for a treat!

The Setup: Songkran is right in the thick of things in Uptown Park.  A few years back I visited this same space when it was a tapas bar, now it is has been completely converted to Songkran a Thai restaurant run by husband and wife Jett and Jira Hurapan. The space is really beautiful with bright Thai inspired murals and a decent sized patio space.  Our group was seated on the patio for dinner.  To combat Houston’s humidity, there are large fans located on the patio.  I unfortunately was not seated in the direct line of one of the fans, but those who were seemed quite comfortable the entire time. I am typically not to keen on sitting outside, fan or not, but it honestly was not too bad.

Drinks: Our dinner started with a cocktail hour with drinks and appetizers.  I had an atrocious day at work so I made a beeline to the bar to try one of the Lychee Martini, one of Songkran’s signature drinks.  I really liked this drink and loved how simple and classic it looked.

The Food:  We tried A LOT of food and they brought everything out fast for us to eat family style.  The food also had the traditional names, so unfortunately that means that I missed a lot of the correct names for the dishes.

Appetizers– The appetizers were passed around during the cocktail hour

Entrees– The entrees came out in two courses. My favorites were the red snapper, braised Wagyu short rib and the crispy duck.  All of the entrees were presented beautifully.

Desserts– The co-owner Chef Jira is actually a pastry chef who takes great pride in the pastry dishes Songkran offers.  My favorite was the White Chocolate Bread Pudding with a scoop of coffee ice cream on top.

The dessert platter. Starting under the water mark and going clockwise, you have the Molten Chocolate Cake, Sagu Tua Dum (Tapioca), White Chocolate Bread Pudding and Lycee & Jackfruit Creme Brulee.

Overall: I enjoyed my experience at Songkran.  With a menu this large, there are definitely going to be items that everyone will like.  Check out our tasting menu for the official names for all of the dishes!
