24 Pancake Recipes to Make Instead of Aunt Jemima

Last week Quaker announced that they were doing away with the name and image of their Aunt Jemima brand.  Founded in 1889, from the beginning Aunt Jemima played on imagery from minstrel shows and the mammy figure, a stereotypical portrayal of a Black woman (think Gone with the Wind). Over the last hundred years or so, societal norms have changed and Aunt Jemima, now part of the Quaker Companies, continued to reckon with it’s own history and imagery.  Rather than removing the name or character of Aunt Jemima, Quaker instead remixed her a couple of times, slimming her down and [...]

THE Houston Itinerary

For those who follow my Instagram story, you are fully aware that this weekend I embarked on the Cadillac of Houston Tours.  A few of my cousins were in town for the weekend from Kansas City including my cousin Brian and his wife who visited last year as well.  Their last visit actually inspired my Houston Neighborhood Guides!  This go around, my cousin Troy joined in on the fun and I was determined to highlight some of my favorite things about my hometown.  Our weekend turned in to THE Houston Itinerary. A little back story.  I've lived in Houston pretty [...]

Houston Neighborhood Guide Pt. 1

I jokingly bragged about the excellent Houston tour I gave to my cousins last year and received so many requests to share the wealth!  I love my hometown and take great pride in showing it off to out-of-towners.   Many people do not know much about the city outside of NASA, Beyonce and our sports teams.   So I consider this a challenge and I must say most of my visitors go home with a new appreciation for the great city of Houston. As I started to think about how I can share my guide, I realized this deserved several posts.  I [...]

10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Blog

Blogging ain't for the faint of heart!  I naively started this blog about three years ago without really having a plan.  I knew enough to buy my domain and pick a theme on Wordpress.  Listen, I really thought only my mother would be reading my blog, but quickly my lack of a plan had me scrambling to catch up! So after three years in the game, there are a few things that I wish I knew way back when.  Rather than watching newbie bloggers flounder like I did, I thought I would share a couple of things I wish I [...]

KitchenAid Ice Cream Attachment vs. Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker

Making frozen custard/ice cream is kinda my thing.   I created a good vanilla ice cream base (find it here) and kind of went from there creating various versions from pistachio, cinnamon olive oil,  to a dairy free and even a no-churn version.   With all but the last recipe, I have used my KitchenAid Mixer Ice Cream Bowl attachment to churn up these great treats.  Despite being happy with my final products, I always wondered about that competitor ice cream maker, the Cuisinart!  I just happened to catch the last generation of the Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker on sale for $45 [...]

Low-key Houston Wine Bars

Cues that monotonous "low-key" song from the Insecure soundtrack that I seem to love.  For a host of reasons many of us are drawn to low-key spots.  Maybe it's a first date and you want less pressure.  Or maybe, it is a night out with girlfriends and low-key means no makeup or heels.  Another good reason, you want to chill in a dark corner by your lonesome!  Whatever reason draws you to a low-key wine bar, this list of Low-Key Houston Wine Bars is for you! Oporto Wine Cafe Their website describes Oporto as a "boutique" spot and I would call [...]

Best Houston Burger Spots

Last Friday I was leaving work and craving a burger.  As I debated, I realized there were WAY too many burger spots in Houston to pick from.  I touched on this a bit before in my Houston Foodie Guide, but figured that my favorite burgers deserved their own blog post.  Also, it seems that my readers LOVE lists, so I am working to create a few more.  So here it is folks, the Black Girls Who Brunch's list of Best Houston Burger Spots.  Before you bash me for skipping  a place, these are all places that I have personally tried.  It [...]

The Mac & Cheese Rules

Let me start by saying I LOVE mac 'n cheese.  It is my all time favorite side dish.  I enjoy making it and of course partaking in devouring it.  As the Thanksgiving holiday approached, I got excited about all the mac 'n cheese I planned to eat.  Then something odd happened, it seemed like everyone was presenting their own spin on mac 'n cheese AND about 50% of these versions broke the cardinal rules!  Scrolling social media, I found myself saying "oh no baby what is you doin' " countless times!  So I decided that as a connoisseur of mac 'n [...]
