Black Girls Who Brunch started as a restaurant review blog with me churning out a few reviews every month, mainly focusing on new restaurants around town.  Well this year, you may have noticed that I have not done those as much even though I have still be dining at new places.  Instagram seems to be getting most of that content which is not really my preference, but  over these six years I have also noticed that a single review blog post never does as well as a list blog post.  Since I am all about saving time and also providing you the content that is most helpful, I am shifting a bit.   So rather than creating a dedicated review for each of these places, here is a list of 10 Houston Restaurants to Visit in August 2021 (which also happens to be Houston Restaurant Weeks)Enjoy!

Tonight and Tomorrow at La Colombe d’Or Hotel

Salmon Salad

If there is a restaurant with a bougie vibe, I will be there sooner than later.  Following the remodel of Montrose hotel La Colombe d’Or Hotel, they reopened their bar/restaurant Tonight and Tomorrow.  It is a beautiful space with lounges, bars and patio dining.  I visited on my birthday this year and must say it is great for special occasions.   Also be sure to be a looky lou upstairs in the beautiful hotel suites.

The hotel is AMAZING

The Nash

Margarita in glass with black straw and lemon wedge

One of THE best margaritas

Located downtown in the Star Apartment building, Nash serves up great Modern American food.   Best of all they have an amazing happy hour which features one of my favorite bites of the 2021, the Bianco Pizza.  They are also featured on the Houston Restaurant Weeks Menu so now is a good time to try them out.

This pizza is a must try!

Greasy Spoon

Stack of seafood, including lobster, catfish and a lemon

Seafood Stack

Earlier this year I visited the Greasy Spoon for a food blogger tasting.  Now, everyone kept raving about how good the food was, but I am not one for traveling outside of the beltway .  Gotta say though, Greasy Spoon is worth the drive.  They are a traditional soul food restaurant with unique dishes like the Seafood Stack and their Smoked Turkey Egg Rolls.  All of these are fingerlicking good.

If you just can’t make it up north to visit, they are currently working on a Pearland location that should be open in the next few months.

George James Tavern

Club sandwich topped with potato chips

Chris Shepherd has another concept that is guaranteed to be popular.  Located downtown in the Market Square Tower, the tavern is a great spot for downtown dwellers and workers.  I dined outside which made for great people watching with folks coming and going from Market Square Tower, however I would recommend dining inside if you can.  The space is beautiful so why miss out on that.   Oh other note, the tavern ain’t cheap so put it on your list for a splurge outing.

Farro Healthy Power Bowl

Like many folks, I dragged my feet getting back into the office.  I was however happy to get back to my downtown dining routine which includes the many food halls like Understory.  While I was working from home Understory added some new concepts including Farro Healthy Power Bowl and I LOVE IT.   When I’m seeking a healthier lunch option, salads seem to be the most popular option, but at Farro you can create your own bowl with a rice or quinoa base.  The options are delicious and priced well too.

Guard and Grace

Corkscrew pasta with cheese sauce topped with parsley

This just may be prettiest new restaurant I have visited this year.  It is a grand modern steakhouse in downtown Houston that brings a certain level of elegance that everyone can appreciate.  Stop by for a work lunch or even consider it for a special occasion or private event.

Pling Htx

A box of dumplings

Even influencers get influenced y’all!  So many of my blogger friends were posting about Pling Htx, so I had to visit it myself.  The dumpling restaurant in the Montrose area is a beautiful space with unique dumplings like the chicken cilantro pling and Korean fried chicken.

Eunice

Two oysters on a plate of salt

Eunice had been on the top of my must try list for a minute and I finally got to visit earlier this Spring.   In Houston’s Greenway area, Eunice is a beautiful space with great seafood dishes like oysters.  During my visit I ordered the hearth roasted oysters with shrimp, blue crab and brown butter breadcrumbs and I would recommend that you do the same!  Plus, their cornbread is a must try during your visit.

Willie G’s

Large wedge fries in a bowl with drizzle and cheese

Y’all I have visited Willie G’s this year more times that I can count.  Their happy hour is truly one of the best in the city, with a little bit of something for everyone.   They also draw a fun crowd too.  If happy hour isn’t your think, they also have a brunch, lunch and dinner Houston Restaurant Weeks menu.

Craft Burger Bar

Loaded fries on a plate

I made another trek outside the beltway to visit a Katy gem, Craft Burger.  This black owned restaurant has had several iterations over the years from the food truck to their location in Finn Hall.  Their Katy location brings you all the gems that you loved before.  Be sure to get the Juicy Lucy burger, it is AMAZING and don’t miss out on their frozen drinks.  They also are featured on the Houston Restaurant Weeks list so August is a great time to visit.

Bonus:

On the Houston Restaurant Weeks list, my go to recommendation is always B&B Butchers.  I go there every year during the month of August and you should too.  Osso & Kristalia is also worth the trip.

Finally, many of these places offer to go or delivery options for those who prefer to dine at home during the covid surge.
