Whewwww another Black Girls Who Brunch event is in the books! A few months back, my friend Monica of Mo Knows Hair came to me with an idea to host a brunch powered by Sally Beauty in my hometown of Houston. Well, you just don’t say no to folks like Monica, plus the whole concept sounded exciting! The opportunity to put together two things black women love brunch and beauty products seemed so perfect. To make this vision come to life, I also partnered with Chef Vicky to create the perfect menu and decided on the cutest event space Etta’s Kitchen. All of the pieces came together perfectly to create Beauty and the Brunch!
This event was a bit different than my first. I opted to not host it at a a restaurant which gave me more control of the menu and event set-up BUT it also required me to do more. Knowing this would be a larger undertaking, I enlisted the help of my good friend Chef Vicky of @thafatgirlfoodchronicles to get the menu together. I knew that she would kill it and she did!
When we first toyed with the idea of her being the chef for the event, I coaxed her into doing it by saying we could good create “brunch stations”. Well, give a small idea to a chef and watch them run with it! For the event, Vicky created a savory and sweet french toast. The savory dish dubbed “Second Line” was a seafood stuffed french toast with a crispy seafood cake. Now while “sweet” is more traditional, Vicky created any anything but traditional sweet french toast. Playing on bananas foster she created a sweet potato foster and stuffed it with cream cheese and topped with sweet potato. DIVINE!
Also, because plain ole mimosas are not enough Vicky created a Pineapple Ginger and Strawberry Banana mimosa for guests to sip on! At one point, I was behind the bar serving up mimosas to guests. I sure hope I had good champagne to juice ratios because you know true brunchers are sensitive about these things!
Those Gift Bags
I take a lot of pride in curating great gift bags for my events! This one really outdid the last one. Through the partnership with Sally Beauty, every guest went home with a gift bag curated by Mo Knows Hair. While Sally Beauty is known for offering great beauty brands, they also have their own lines! First up, everyone received two items from the Pure Oils by Silk Elements line, the clarifying shampoo and the intense conditioning & hydration masque. The bags also included a few items from the new Texture ID line which I also cannot wait to try. Everyone also received a nice paddle brush. I can’t wait to see what style attendees create with these products.
The best part of this is we had Mo Knows Hair to go through these products with us so we know when best to use them! For example, the Texture ID foam can be used in instances where you would grab a gel for a wash-n-go. That was probably my favorite take-away from the gift bag.
Also, I happen to have ONE extra bag left over from the event. Rather than hoarding it for myself, I decided to do a giveaway! Keep an eye out on my Instgram this week for the giveaway post!
Oh and the Giveaways
If the bags were not enough, we also had a few giveaways! A few lucky ladies walked away with blow dryers or gift cards from Sally Beauty. I also gave away body scrubs from my cousin’s brand Yeu Body Care. Be sure to check out her Instagram for more of what she has to offer. Also, my foodie friend Julie of Foodies Gonna Food, gave a pretty cool gift basket from Beauty Counter! Finally, each guest walked away with a great swag bag from the new Acrimony movie including a free ticket to see the movie!
I really loved everything about this event! It turned out great and I think attendees really had a good time. Many have asked, when is the next one and I am not sure just yet honestly! If you want to be the first to know, be sure to subscribe to Black Girls Who Brunch! To those who attended, thank you for coming and I hope you had a good time!
