EADO (East Downtown) seems to be the new hot area in Houston! I guess I am a follower because this is my third post from a spot in EADO this summer alone!  This past weekend I grabbed by blogger friend Chef Vicky and we headed to Around the Corner to catch up on things like Insecure and strategize about this blogging game.   Check out my recap of Brunch at Around the Corner!

The Setup:

Around the Corner is housed in a converted 1930s bungalow.   The charm of the home remains with original hard floors and a floor plan that seems to match the original house.  Outside, there are few patio tables for guests.  Then inside a bar anchors the main room. Just to the right there are quiet spaces with tables and chairs placed organically throughout.  As you walk through the house, you see beautiful chandeliers that fit the bungalow look.   On the outside of the restaurant, there is a large patio with great views of downtown!  In our cooler months, the back patio is a popular hang out spot.

For drinks, you can get just about anything here!  In the morning Around the Corner serves as a coffee and workspace for patrons.  Guests can enjoy lattes, coffee and cappuccinos! Oh and those lattes? They definitely have instagrammable latte art and we all know that is a huge draw for those “doing it for the gram.”

Hashtag, latte art!

Morning pastries!

Outside of the breakfast drinks, Around the Corner also has you covered with standard brunch drinks.  I kept it simple with a mimosa while my friend had a beautiful bloody mary.   I also appreciate restaurants that go beyond your standard mimosa or bloody mary.  Around the Corner certainly does this.  For example, you can sub the orange juice for blood orange in the mimosa.   Guests can also opt for drinks like prosecco.

Keep in mind, since Around the Corner is primarily a bar, they also have you covered on cocktails, wine and beer.   I just happened to be there a bit too early for that, but I have visited in the past at night and enjoyed it!

The Food

On Saturday and Sunday, the brunch menu is front and center!  We enjoyed three entrees from the current brunch menu the High Five Hangover Hash, Buttermilk Bacon & Bourbon French Toast and the BrieLT!

The spread!

The high five hangover hash includes braised pork, roasted veggies, hash browns and cheddar all topped with an egg.   I was skeptical of this dish to start.  After my friend Vicky (who is a chef) said it was good, I dove right and in and was instantly in love.  The flavors are on point, pork cooked well and there is just enough cheese to make it a huge win for me! I think I was thrown off by the random ingredients because I prefer simpler dishes, but it all works here.   Think of it this way, can’t you imagine yourself waking up after a night out and just throwing random things in your fridge together to make a dish? It is random and if you were not hungover you would never put this together, but somehow it just works!  That is this dish! They picked the perfect name for it.

The Hangover Hash!

No brunch menu is complete for me without a signature french toast and Around the Corner handles that with their buttermilk bacon & bourbon french toast.  Served in a cast iron skillet, it is more like a french toast casserole.  The fresh fruit and powdered sugar are great additions and yet it still is not too sweet.  I was able to drown it in the syrup to eat which is how I like my french toast!

Another view of this beautiful dish!

Finally, I let Vicky try the brieLT because I am not an egg fan.  This dish received the chefs approval!  From reading the menu, it comes off like a fancier egg sandwich.  When you think about it, a scrambled egg sandwich is such a common breakfast at home dish, but so rarely seen on brunch menus! Smart addition by Around the Corner.

The Takeaway

Some may say that Around the Corner has a lot going on and it does, but it fits the need of a growing neighborhood to me! I love the idea of walking there for coffee in the morning, brunching there on Sunday and stopping by for happy hour during the week! Or for those who work downtown, it is a good chill after work spot. These are things that we miss in cities as big as Houston, so when you have it I say we should cherish it!

Some other things to know about Around the Corner!

  • Mondays are $3.50 pint night
  • Tuesday is wine night! Guests can order a bottle of wine for $20 and receive a complementary antipasto.
  • Thursday is steak night!
  • Saturday and Sundays brunch is served!
  • Also, EADO Car Wash, a black owned business just down the street will drop you off at Around the Corner while you wait on your car.  So you can enjoy some appetizers and perhaps a cocktail while you wait.
  • Finally, Around the Corner is near so many great Houston murals that are easy to get to!
