My friends introduce me as the girl who has a blog called “Black Girls Who Brunch.” Then they add, “but she NEVER posts about brunch though!” I of course hit ’em with a serious side-eye and explain that a black girl who brunches is multi-faceted! I feel the need to say this at the start of every brunch post because I hate to see the “FINALLY” comments from my friends. So yes, I say all of this to say, I found a new brunch spot that I must share with you guys!
Last week, my super talented cousin Kamilah came to town for a conference. Kamilah is actually the brains behind my fabulous website design! You can check her out here. Anywho, she hit google/yelp in search of a brunch spot and came up with Raven Grill. I decided to join her and a few of her friends.
The Raven Grill is off of Bissonnet in the heart of West University, near Rice. You have to get deep in the neighborhood to find this restaurant. The staff welcomed us like we were neighbors and many of the guests walked in as if they visit often. For these reasons, I would definitely call this spot a hidden neighborhood gem. I guarantee that folks around there probably do not want you to know about it!
I kept it simple to start and ordered a mimosa because as I always say, you really cannot mess that up! If mimosas aren’t your thing, Raven Grill has a fully stocked bar so you can pick up some “after 5” drinks too. For the food, their menu is primarily filled with egg dishes and I don’t eat eggs. I quickly zoned in on the french toast, which I guess is also an egg dish due to the egg batter. Just ignore that contradiction. At Raven Grill, the french toast includes an orange zest which makes a little different than most you would find around town. The flavor was on point, but on my next visit I would just ask for them to cook it a little longer for me.
While I am not a fan of eggs, my cousin was all about ordering the crab eggs benedict. This dish came out and made me reconsider my prohibition on eggs and such. It’s a beautiful dish and according to her, is as delicious as it looks!
The Raven Grill is a personable neighborhood restaurant with good food. I kind of felt like I was crashing a neighborhood party inside, but everyone was very welcoming and accommodating! If you are looking for a quiet spot, that is guaranteed to have good food, Raven Grill is a great place to start.
