Hi it’s me again, filling up your mailboxes with tons of posts that I have been waiting to share! This time, I am sharing my experience at Sterling House a beautiful bar in Houston’s midtown. A few weeks ago Sterling House hosted the Houston Food Blogger Collective for a tasting of their best dishes and cocktails.
Sterling House is in midtown, not to far from Montrose. This beautiful bar is housed in a historic home built in the early 1900s. I am a sucker for old historic homes in general and I love when folks convert them into functional spaces like bars or restaurants. Some of the highlights of Sterling House are the large wraparound porches on the first and second floor. Unfortunately, their views of downtown are obstructed, but it’s a great view of Montrose and Midtown.
On the main level, you have a nice size patio area before entering the “house.” Once inside you are greeted by a quaint dining space and a bar. Upstairs you find a darker decorated space with a larger bar and of course the outside porch. I imagine upstairs would be a great space for a private party. Also note, each bar offers a different drink menu!
This was a pretty free flowing event with the chef and owner just brining out some of their shareable dishes for us to gawk over and then inhale. Up first, the large potato wedges, regular and truffle versions. These wedges are HUGE. Like, I’ve never seen wedges that big.
Up next we tried the mac and cheese. Now, I claim to be a mac and cheese connoisseur and when the dish arrived to my table I was not unsure if I would be a fan of it. It did not seem to have enough cheese sauce which is MUST for me. Despite it’s look, the mac and cheese and sufficient flavor and sauce. One of the versions even included some brisket which certainly added more flavor! I would not have thought to add brisket to mac and cheese, but it truly was a winner.
Finally, I tried the Sterling House burger. When I looked over at what guests were ordering, it seemed like this was a popular dish. Most burgers from bars are of the frozen patty variety with a few condiments for flavor. This burger was certainly a step above!
I unfortunately had to leave this event early so I was not able to get the full bar demo that happened later in the evening. I had small sample of the mariposa, a cocktail with deep eddy ruby red vodka, elderflower liqueur, ginger beer and flamed orange essence. This was a refreshing cocktail that is presented in a photo ready manner.
Sterling House hits in all of the important areas venue, location, food, vibe and drinks! If you are looking for a lowkey spot in the Midtown/Montrose area, Sterling House should definitely be on your list!
