I make a point to keep an eye out for all the new openings in Houston River Oaks District. Since opening last fall, River Oaks District has become home to Houston’s premiere luxury stores and restaurants. After visiting the district’s inspiration Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles, I am even more convinced of the district’s luxury creds! Back to the issue at hand, Thursday marked the opening of another exciting River Oaks tenant, Amorino a Parisian based gelato franchise brought to Houston by a Parisian couple! Some of you are probably thinking gelato? Blah blah blah! I can just grab Talenti from my local grocery store if I have a major a gelato craving. This is where you are wrong my friend. The major draw for Amorino is that the gelato is placed on your ice cream cone in the shape of a rose! Like I said, this spot opened on Thursday and by Friday evening I was in line to partake because I just cannot resist Instagram worthy food experiences :).
Located next to iPic theaters, Amorino will have long lines soon enough. We lucked out and entered during a brief downtime, but we spent so much time tasting the flavors that we caused a line to form! Sorry guys! When we walked in, we were instructed to pay first and then proceed to pick as MANY flavors as we wanted for our rose cone. That bears repeating, as many flavors for the standard price! We eagerly headed to taste and decide on the flavors for our roses. The first section included macaroons which you could opt to adorn atop your rose. Next up, a variety of colorful sorbets. If you want a pretty realistic rose pick a few colors from this section.
I prefer gelato over sorbets and since I had to eat this masterpiece I went with what I like! I generally go with one flavor of ice cream, but in this instance more flavors, means more colors, means prettier rose! For my flavors, I picked the vanilla, biscotti and the Ecuadorian chocolate. There were SO many chocolate options!!
Since the gelato is shaped on the outside of the cone, it does melt fast. I may have spent a little TOO much time snapchatting my cone rather than eating it so I created a bit of mess. It was well worth it though! As far as the gelato goes, this is real deal high quality stuff! Their website boasts about using high end ingredients many of which are shipped in from Paris. The dedication shows in the product. Each flavor was rich and had the creaminess that I enjoy with a gelato over your standard ice cream. In short, while you get the attraction of the rose shaped cones, you are still getting a GREAT dessert!
