Before everyone left for the holidays, my co-worker and I stopped over at Local Foods in Rice Village for our standard Friday out of the office lunch ! As the name implies, Local Foods showcases local ingredients on their menu and I love to support locally owned places!
Location/Setup: Local Foods has two Houston location, one in Upper Kirby and the other in Rice Village next to their sister restaurant Benjys. This visit was my first stop to the Rice Village location, which is a bit smaller than the Upper Kirby location. We stopped by during peak lunchtime and Christmas shopping. Parking was hard to come by, so we parked over by Torchy’s and walked the few blocks over. Once inside, we ordered at the counter and found a spot at one of the large tables. Both locations of Local Foods have large tables that are meant to be shared with others. If you are freaked out by a stranger sitting near you, then this is probably not the restaurant for you. I love the idea. It is efficient and a better use of space. An added plus is you can make some new friends while breaking bread with strangers.
Food: I ordered the gulf shrimp and blue crab sandwich. I am not seafood expert, but the main word I can use to describe this sandwich is fresh. The sandwich tastes as though the shrimp and crab were plucked out of a clean part of the gulf just that morning. This sandwich is served on a ciabatta roll, which is one of my favorite types of breads. WIN. The sandwich also came with delicious homemade chips and quinoa. It is not a heavy lunch, but very generous portions.
Overall: I love Local Foods for a nice high quality, casual lunch.
