Living in Houston, Texas means you will be inundated with Tex-Mex restaurants.  It’s kind of our niche thing here.  If you have ask any Houston Foodie their favorite Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurant, be prepared for a long list of options.  I am no different!  One day, I will make a list of my favorites, but for today I am just featuring one that I frequent often, Torchy’s Tacos!!!

Torchy’s started in Austin, Texas as a food truck and was so successful they were able to open a brick and mortar store. They eventually expanded to Houston and have grown rapidly here.  Last time I counted there were five Houston locations.  I have only been to the Shepherd location and the Rice Village location.   A few weeks ago, some friends and I ditched a dead happy hour event to go over to the Torchy’s on Shepherd.  Torchy’s is never ever a bad decision.

The expansive menu.

It is a pretty laid back restaurant, where you order as you enter and they bring your food to you.  First off, the menu. Torchy’s has more taco combinations than the inventor of tacos ever thought were possible.  From your simple beef fajita tacos, to tacos with brisket, a slice of avocado.  There are very creative choices, which I think is a carry over from their food truck days.  I find that food trucks go for more unique fusion menu options than your typical brick and mortar restaurants.  I was a tad “hangry” on this visit, so I stuck with what I know and love, the beef fajita tacos (pictured above).  Per usual, Torchy’s did not fail me. The beef is tender and seasoned well.  Plus they add a nice helping of pico, peppers and cheese.  I do not even like pico, but for some reason I love it on this taco!! Also, you cannot go to Torchy’s without getting queso. Hands down, this is some of the best queso in Houston. They put a dollop of guacamole on top, then mix in plenty of veggies to make for a nice chunky queso.  Even their tortilla chips are above average.  God I love this place! When you just want a chill spot to fulfill your Tex-Mex craving, there really is no better place than Torchy’s!

I love unique features/signs like this in restaurants. The Rice Village location has a pretty sign too.
