One of my favorite things to do in my free time is watch all types of reality tv and I am not afraid to admit it! While channel surfing one weekend I discovered Wahlburgers, a show about the Wahlbergs’ attempt to start a burger chain with their brother who is a chef. Now as far as reality tv show goes, this show is probably scripted, but I love this show! I think what keeps me watching is the fact that the Wahlberg family and their bond are truly what the show is about. So rather than going for typical Boston fare like chowder and lobster rolls, I decided to be THAT girl who goes to a burger joint just because it was on a reality show.
Wahlburgers is not in Boston proper yet, so we had to drive out to Hingham, Massachusetts. They say Hingham is part of the Boston metro area but it felt like a whole new area to me. It’s best described by comparing it to one of those towns featured in old movies like Mystic Pizza or Practical Magic with the water as a major feature. I found it charming. Wahlburgers sits on the water near a shipyard so it provides a great view for those who dine on their patio.
After snapping a few pictures of the outdoor scenery we entered and were immediately greeted by a host. The host explained that one side offered table service dining and the other allowed you to place your order and pick your seat, similar to a Five Guys set up. One quick glance and we see that there aren’t many tables in the seat yourself section remaining. But the host guaranteed us that we would have a table once our food was ready. He explained that guests are asked to order their food first and then find a table. If there are not enough tables available, the cashier will stop taking orders until more tables become available. Well of course we were the ones who ordered and did not have a table :/ Turns out someone did not follow the “place your order and then sit” rule, just throwing the whole system off. The situation was thankfully remedied before our food was ready, but I can see continued bumps with that system.
To my disappointment, none of the Wahlbergs were present while we were there and I did not recognize any of the staff from the show. Also as expected, the restaurant seemed much smaller in person than it does on tv. It is amazing what they can do with camera angles. The restaurant is as bright green as the show makes it seem though. There are also various touches that allude to the Wahlberg family including a family portrait of the whole group as children. Since the love of family is what draws people to the show, I think that’s a nice touch!
As far as the food goes, I will admit it, I bought into the hype from the reality show and expected an exceptional burger as was promised on the show. The burger was just okay. I ordered Donnie’s Favorite, the BBQ bacon burger. Since I am picky, I skipped on the avocado and jalepenos. Those two items probably give this dish the extra umph it was missing for me, so I cannot fault them on that. The beef itself just did not wow me, but I will say the patty was clearly from fresh beef and not a frozen patty like a lot of burger joints. I also ordered the Yukon Gold fries and enjoyed those more than the burger. Most people seemed to gravitate towards the onion rings and I did not see too many empty plates so I guess majority says they are good. Also I got a peak at the Alma’s macaroni salad, it looked really good. I would definitely pick that over the fries if I ever go back.
